Zearing Rehab to Home SUCCESS Story - Just Another Success for This Patient
When active Story City resident Fern Anderson fractured her hip she and her family were concerned how the final result might affect her activity level. "I love watching my grandchildren play the sports they are involved in. That's one of my favorite hobbies. It was important to me that I continue to be able to be involved in that ", states Fern from her home in Story City. Fern selected Zearing Health Care Center for her skilled rehab and she is very pleased with the results of her therapy and the care she received. "I had a very big room with a wonderful view. The therapy was great. They even showed me how to do many things that would help me at home. I don't really know what I expected when I went there, but Zearing was recommended and I am very happy that's where I decided to go, " adds Fern.
When Fern first came to Zearing Health Care Center she was very weak and unable to walk without assistance. "I really couldn't walk without a lot of help when I first came to Zearing. I couldn't even stand alone. It was difficult at first," states Fern. But, that didn't stop Fern from participating in occupational and physical therapy programs designed just for her to help her successfully return home.
Fern did great at rehab, but then Fern is never afraid of a challenge. Fern's mother was born in Norway and often talked about the landscape where she grew up and the beautiful parcel of land she overlooked each day. After many, many years Fern finally made the long trip to Norway and was able to see for herself the beauty her mother talked about. She visited and photographed the exact scenic valley her mother overlooked in Norway each day. That is the photograph she is holding in the photo to the left of this article. Something she still holds dear. Just like making the dream of traveling to Norway a reality, Fern made the goal of completing her rehab a goal she successfully completed. Fern has beautifully journaled her many accomplishments and memories in words and photographs. The life's journal another treasure she holds dear to her heart and is open to sharing with family and friends.
Fern made lots of new friends at Zearing Health Care Center and her sister also lives there as a long-term care Resident. "I really enjoyed all the activities, especially getting my nails painted. I really loved a little bit of everything!" That's what we loved about Fern too - a little bit of everything. Congratulations, Fern, on successfully completing your rehab and getting back home to once again enjoy your memories and photos of Norway.

Maxine Lundy has done many things during her life including volunteering at Zearing Health Care Center for over 20 years. She enjoys life and lives it to the fullest. Becoming a senior has not stopped this Zearing resident from pursuing her active life.
Recently Maxine traveled from Zearing to California and visited her daughter. While she was there Maxine slipped and fractured her right humerus. Unfortunately, Maxine also has arthritis in both shoulders, so a fracture in this area could limit mobility and be very painful during healing.
After a short initial stay at a skilled rehab center in California, Maxine returned home to Zearing. Still requiring skilled rehab, she selected Zearing Health Care Center to provide her physical and occupational therapy.
What does this volunteer of over 20 years think of the recent remodeling and private rehab suites? She couldn't be happier, "I have a wonderful private room!" states Maxine, who has a beautiful remodeled private room with a view overlooking a wooded park.
Not only does she like the room, but she is impressed with the care she has received from the staff. "The staff work very hard and are very polite. They take care of everything I need," says Maxine. As someone who doesn't slow down, Maxine enjoys the lively social atmosphere at Zearing Health Care Center. "I like the activities here especially bowling. I like getting my hair done, and going outside often," says Maxine.
Maxine has made tremendous strides toward 100% recovery of her humerus fracture during her stay at Zearing Health Care Center. She has worked diligently with her therapists and again has the ability to use her shoulder and do the many activities she enjoys doing.

Esther Hanson was hospitalized and recovering from pneumonia when she developed a blood clot in her lung. Not only did this complicate her recovery from pneumonia, but Esther also suffers from congestive heart failure. The physicians recommended that before going home Esther have rehab at a skilled unit to participate in physical therapy allowing her to regain the strength she had lost.
"I didn't really want to do rehab. I just wanted to go home," says Esther. She was in for a surprise, "I liked being here! I didn't think it would be fun, but it really was. It was fun!" Therapists at Zearing Health Care Center worked with Esther to complete her rehab until she was safely able to return home. Esther was very weak when she initially arrived, but through therapy and nursing care, she successfully met her goals and returned home. The hospital was great in providing complete medical information prior to her admission so we knew before she came in that her rehab would be more complicated due to her underlying congestive heart failure and PE. Everything worked together from admission to discharge.
"Everything here was great, the care, the food, and the private room was beautiful," says Esther of her rehab stay at Zearing. "Everyone here is so nice and very helpful. The staff made sure that I had everything I needed when I needed it. I even made friends in the time I was here," said Esther smiling. Congratulations, Esther, you did it!

Betty Perisho was doing what she normally does, just helping out at the community center when she fell and fractured her left hip and wrist. Not one to be down long, Betty selected Zearing Health Care Center to quickly do her rehab.
"The care she received and the staff have been wonderful. I had reservations when I knew she would have to go someplace for rehab, but it has been great here! I was able to sleep at night knowing she was getting the best of care", says Betty's daughter Joan Milosevich. Betty completed her rehab program successfully and was discharged from Zearing Health Care Center. We are sure Betty will soon be hosting her afternoon coffees again, mowing her three acres, and Gator riding that is, driving her golf cart. However, the staff at Zearing Health Care Center has no doubt that if she wanted to tame a real gator she could do it! Congratulations, Betty!
